I sent out two patches recently, one today only to the mailinglist.

People sometimes forget to browse the mailing list - depending on other workload etc. IMHO it should be ok to "spam" the original author of code by an explicit email. That way they are pressed to look into it and respond. I personally would respond in a day or two at best.
